Practicing Criminal Defense since 2000
Richard Chacon graduated from Gonzaga University in 1995 with degrees in Psychology and Public Relations. He graduated Cum Laude while volunteering for numerous organizations including, the Student of Color Admission Committee, The Wishing Star Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.
After college, he earned a full-tuition scholarship to The Law School at The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. At USC, Richard was the student assistant for Charles Whitebread, the famous law professor who taught “Criminal Procedure” to a nationwide audience of lawyers, judges and law students. At the end of law school, Richard earned the Shattuck Award for demonstrating “The Most Promise in the Legal Profession.”
In addition to the Juris Doctorate degree from the Gould School of Law, Richard obtained a Master’s in Communications from the Annenberg School of Communication at USC. He graduated With Distinction from that program.
He graduated in 1999, immediately passed the bar exam and became an associate at the criminal defense firm of Bruce Margolin in January of 2000. Margolin was a high volume criminal firm specializing in drug crimes. Richard had great success, but left later that same year to establish The Law Office of Richard M. Chacon, which allowed him the opportunity to work more closely with a smaller number of clients.
Since that time, Richard has focused exclusively on criminal defense and handles criminal and administrative proceedings where a person’s liberty is at stake. His practice has included virtually every proceeding including hearings, motions, adjudications and trials in a variety of venues including criminal courts, college administrations, and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
In addition, he has also been very active in the community. Richard has served as a Board Member on the Mexican American Bar Association for six years and acted as their Newsletter Editor and Judicial Evaluation Chairperson. Also, he has contributed many articles which were published in the Daily Journal. He has remained heavily involved at USC Law School, serving on the Advisory Committee for the USC Public Interest Law Foundation and helping to create the USC Latino Law Alumni Association. Currently, he is an Advisory Board Member for Community Lawyers, Inc., a Community Advisor for the Hollenbeck Police Business Council, and he is the 2018 President for the Criminal Courts Bar Association.
In 2010, the USC Latino Law Students Association honored Richard with the Inspiration Alumnus Award at the annual Judges & Lawyers Night.
“I genuinely care about my clients. This is not just my business, this is my passion.”
